Bad Bass 10K

Results

The results are in from yesterday’s Bad Bass 10K!! I’ve managed to be in the top 10 for my age category (Female 25-29), and 1st for my age!!! If you’ve followed my last 1oK, you’ll see my pace is EXACTLY the same. Which to me is no surprise, due to the fact that this was a trail run and had a major incline lasting 1 mile -which by the way, myself and everyone else did not run up.

Top 1o Female 10K 25-29

Top 10

I’m happy with my performance, but would like to push myself a little harder (It’s getting a little competitive between my body and mind. I hope that makes any sense.) The boyfriend says I’m holding myself back, and safely cruising during my run. I can agree completely.

So here go…..My last 10k is at weeks end, and the start of a new month. I plan to hit it hard, knowing the course is all flat land, and not a trail. Pure pavement, and straight. Ideally, I’d like to hit a 10min/9.5 mile pace, and come in right at the 1 hour mark, but let’s see. Wish me luck!

Here are a few shots from the race.

I love wearing ALL black to my runs, it’s a symbol of death…For my fat.

Looking at these photos, are pretty amazing to me, because it shows the journey I’ve gone through, and all in action! When I compare my body size to last March to my first 5K, you can see the radical change of my appearance.

BadBass10K

To my reader: if you’re going through a physical transformation, or just starting your first 5K, to keep up the good work! I hope my journey can continually inspire you, and help you through the start of your journey. Nothing worth having, comes easy. Do not quit. Because hard work, and all the obstacles you go through will pay off..

Here’s to a week of waking up early, training hard, and focusing on your goals! Cheers!

29 and Feeling GREAT!!

The last year of my twenties is finally here. I’ve prepared myself the last couple months for this. I’ve grown from the beginning of February until now. With a huge leap of faith,  having trust in myself, and will power; all has definitely gotten me through so many metal and physical challenges the last few months. From creating my little segment of my Journey To 30, I’ve decided to document the last few years of my 20s. As I’ve mentioned early on the past months, 28 wasn’t so great. From being unhappy my myself mentally and physically – I’ve decided to step out of that darkness I once was in. I want to create a woman I am proud of, and be proud of.

I’ve realized over the course of the last few months, you can have whatever you want in life. It just takes the right timing, the right mindset, and the willingness to risk it all. Put in your all, you can have whatever you want. Seriously, the hard work pays of. Stepping into my last year of my twenties was perfectly timed as I’ve ended my last contract with my trainer. The warm-up is over, and the true test begins. The real challenge awaits, and only I can conquer it. While soaking up every bit of knowledge my trainer has provided for me, I’ve decided to continue my health fitness journey without him (which was really hard), and achieve my goal weight on my own. So far, I’m doing great!!!

All with the proper nutrition, sticking with my fitness regimen, putting in my miles every single day, and surrounding myself with like minded positive people is all I need. I’ve found my balance with myself, household chores, being patient with the children, and having healthy direct communication with my boyfriend as well as my friends and family. With all of this aligned, I can only point fingers to all the hard work and effort I had put in with being healthy and fit. When you put in the hard work, everything comes clear and balanced. No joke. It’s pretty amazing how it all falls into place.

Turning 29 hasn’t scared me a bit. I may be 29, but I feel like I’m in a 23 year olds body!!!

Cheers to the last year of my twenties!!

Nitro Trail 10K @ Point Pinole

Last Saturday was my first ever 10K race at Point Pinole Regional Park. Home of gunpowder and dynamite manufacturers for almost 100 years, Point Pinole became part of the East Bay Regional Park District in the 1970s. With panoramic views of the bay, wildflowers, over 100 species of bird and eucalyptus woodlands (originally planted to buffer potential explosions!), Point Pinole Regional Shoreline Park is truly the hidden gem of the East Bay. If you have never been there before, you are in for a surprise. (Read more info about Point Pinole Nitro Race here from Brazen Racing)

During the months of April and May, I’ve been consistently training for 5K & 10K runs. I would run in the mornings right after I drop off my son to school, and jog with the jogging stroller pushing my 4year old. I would also run in the evenings, by myself as the boys stayed home with daddy and work on homework — which is such a great routine for us as family! And also squeeze in Sunday early morning runs and hikes with girlfriend-moms (who are on the same track to a healthy lifestyle).

Running is my main source of cardio for weight loss. I also have registered myself for a couple of runs throughout the year. To give myself an event to look forward too, as to keeping myself honest, and stay true to my fitness goals. This was apart of my early goals back in early February when I decided to start a new healthy lifestyle, that includes not only a fit a healthy physical body; but mind, body and soul. Getting back in touch with my trainer, somehow running into him at the utter most perfect time in my life, I took it as a sign that I needed him the most, to get me back on track.

During my race, I was surprised on how well I was able to conserve my energy and not blow it by sprinting the first few miles. Since this was my first 10K trail race, I didn’t really know what to expect. I did my little research of checking the course maps (Nitro10kMap,) and searching up the elevation, but you never really know how its going to be. By all means, I have been training but going around my local lake 3 times (6miles), gets boring, and I tend to not push myself as hard, as if I was at a real run. Friends and family told me to keep my time under just about an hour…..Silly me, I was off my 8 minutes!

If you look above at my results, I was going at a 11.02 pace! That’s a minute slower than my usual! I shouldn’t have jogged so casually!! Yes, I know its only a difference of a few minutes, but my goal was to at least keep it at that hour mark!! At my last run, The Mermaid Run, I went at a speed of 10.02. EXACTLY 1 minute more. !#$%^# This only pushes me to do better at my next run (which I’m literally going to schedule today! Sometime this month!) and never slack off, and take my runs so casually.

Average Time Marks

The average time for runners to complete a 10K race generally falls between 50-70 minutes. The median time for American 10K racers in 2012 was 55:52 for men and 1:04:37 for women, according to Running USA. A 1:02 finish in a 10K race, for example, requires a pace of 10 minutes per mile. Extremely fit runners can run 7-minute miles or quicker, while weekend joggers might fall in the 10- to 14-minute range for their miles. (Read More about Typical 10K Times For A Runner Or Jogger HERE)

Overall, I am very happy with the outcome of my first ever 10K. My goals from here are to run 2 more 10Ks, then strictly train for Half Marathons, bleeding into 2016 attempting my first ever full marathon. Come back for more updates, on my #JourneyTo30, to check up on my journey through health and fitness, and also Happy 1st Day of June! It’s my birthday month/week – and I also end tail end of a 30 Day Transformation diet I’ve been trying out…..So far: I’m feeling great!!!!!!

Desire To Change

Everyday I make sacrifices that will align them towards my goals. I’ve made changes to my every day routines, and am willing to pour in the hard work and effort. Derrick started a new job, but works on East Coast hours; so he wakes up everyday at 5AM. I’ve now gotten in the same routine where I wake up with him. Our internal clocks our now on the same rhythm; except I don’t get paid for waking up at 5AM.

We start our mornings with taking our natural sugar-free energy drinks, morning vitamins. From there, we separate starting on our own personal routines. He goes into his office, and I head straight to the garage to workout, contribute to my blog, or get a head start to my household chores without the children as a distraction. Our morning routines have become such an ideal schedule for us. Just adding in the additional 2 hours to my day, I am capable of accomplishing many things in the morning.

Being a stay at home, weekdays are my workdays, and weekends get twice as busy. Family parties, baseball games, and other misc last minute get-togethers and meetings. The past month, I’ve schedule every other Sunday to hike or run with my good friend Ermina. We both wake up at 5AM, and meet 6AM ready to run or hike. See, I love friendships like that. Met Ermina at mutual friends’ kids bowling birthday party, and hit it off. I love her seriousness in making plans. Holding each other accountable, and staying true to our plans.

Mission Peak

Last Sunday we decided to hike Mission Peak. Mission Peak is a public park that borders and overlooks the Silicon Valley. It is very popular with local hikers, bicyclists, sightseers and tourists from beyond for its vista and strenuous climb. It’s a full six-mile (10km) round-trip. The  The “Mission Peeker” marker pole at the top is the most famous geo-tagged landmark of Fremont.

Mission Peak Top

hHere’s a picture of us at the top, with the Mission Peak marker pole. Usually, hikers stay at the top of awhile rest and have a morning snack, we literally hiked up, shared a granola bar while waiting in line for picture, and headed right back down. That’s what I call a morning! Keep it moving! Be outdoors, waking up early, and being productive for your mind, body, and soul!

Feeling balanced, healthy, and inspired always.

Shed’s Off Like Water

Weigh In

Current Weight at 5/15/2015

In the beginning of my health transformation I was struggling with side planks, sit-ups, and could barely lift 15 pound weight over my shoulders. It was so hard for me to vision a future healthier and happier me. Starting off at 144lbs and out of breath doing side planks at 30seconds – made me want to become stronger and stronger. Sweating so hard after a 6mile run, and after a workout session with my trainer, made me feel so high. A healthy high.

After finally getting over the the 10 pound hump, my appetite has definitely curved, and exercise had became a staple in my everyday daily life. There are weeks when I hit it hard everyday. Some days, I may slip due to resting my muscles due to being sore, or by scheduled appointments, and household errands. But those days I wasn’t able to go to the park to run, I end up working out sometime later in the day from home. Mountain climbers, body builders, 2 minute warm-ups, and so on. I create room and space in my living room, and do my exercises while watching TV.

This is just a weigh-in check post, to document how I’ve been feeling lately. I want to remind myself to never give up. If you’re going through a transformation like myself, create a contract to yourself, or follow yourself taking a pictures. I’m tired of the old me, the memories of the old me, and the feeling of that me. Continue looking forward, be persistent. I want to inspire others, because I feel my story is so relatable. Before children I was 115lbs, and after carrying two children in my body, and a poor diet afterwards, its time to take charge. Food is fuel. Make it good food.

Results

The results are in! Back in early February, I decided to take action in becoming a happier and healthier me! I made a clear goal for me to get physically fit, while registering myself in local runs. 5Ks, 10Ks, and moving up to Half Marathons. Getting fit will align my life to being happier in other aspects in life. The stars aligned, and just a few days later making this lifestyle I bummed into my old personal trainer. Since then, the rest was history.

I’ve now dropped 10lbs!!! I started high intensive workouts, as well as running Monday through Friday. I started at 142lbs, and now at 132lbs. Take a look at my before and after pictures! The left pictures are so disgusting! I feel so embarrassed that I had let go of myself once again, after a fitness year back in 2013.

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll be able to see daily pictures of my fitness journey. Now, I’m no insta-famous fitness pro, but I do take joy in inspiring others to fall into the path of a healthier lifestyle. In my JourneyTo30 mission, I’ve mentioned that 2014 wasn’t a great year for me. It was such a fall-out physically, as I slowly regressed into old unhealthy habits, something completely different then how I was all in 2013. Although, in 2014 I lost a few friends, and gained weight; I also gained wonderful new relationships with others that has literally brought me joy and pure happiness. With new friendships, comes an open mind, I’ve changed my mindset out of old ways, making myself healthier mentally. Out with the old, in with the new right?

Side

Here are my side by side, before and after pictures. The LEFT pictures are me early March of 2015, weighing in at 142lbs. The RIGHT pictures are me during the last week April weighing in at 132lbs.

Now, I am NO WHERE near my ultimate goal weight, but definitely feel a difference! Sit-ups are not as complicated to do, and my core has undoubtedly before stronger. Friends I’ve seen can tell the difference (which is the best feeling, when people notice the weight-loss).

So what are my goals after this half of my fitness journey? To push myself HARDER than the first time. And surpass the first 10lbs lost, in a smaller timeframe. This I can definitely do. And I’m willing to show you, share with you, and possibly help you plant the seed in your head to get focused and start a healthy lifestyle.

Back

Having a healthier lifestyle, a consistant strict diet, and infusing daily exercise with running everyday as make me feel better and healthier , in all aspects of my life. I wake up with ease every morning, my patience with my children has gotten better without the help of caffeine,  and multitasking isn’t as messy to this mommy. Before, I wasn’t able to alot of these things correctly. Or, I was only able to focus on one vs. the other. Since the whole fitness change, it’s changed everything in my life for the better.

Stay tuned fore more on my health and fitness Journey to 30. I can’t wait just to see how things change over time, even just within a few days.

Spring Break Body: Featuring TheChicSite

With Spring break around the corner, pressures of having the bikini body are in the air. Target is already selling their summer swim suits, which by the way are totally adorable!) While currently working out with my personal trainer 3 times a week, and running everyday, my goals are coming closer, with losing weight, and dropping my body fat percentage! Just seeing my trainer already 4 times this month I’ve dropped 4 lbs and 10% body fat! That’s significantly faster than my first contract I had with him back in 2013!!

This time around my goals have become way more full-grown. Instead of searching for that bikini body, I’m in search of endurance, and strength in my knees and ankles to secure me from injury during my runs. Over the time of being a mom the past 7 in a half years, I’ve never really had goals to have a bikini body. The stretch marks from pregnancy have also numbed me from that goal. It was never really a priority, yet, I didn’t really have any big problem with it. Not until I saw Rachel from The Chic Site.

Here’s her Bikini Picture that she had posted on her FB Fan page just last week. I love how she exposed her mom body, with confidence, a huge smile, while projecting complete happiness and joy, being proud of her body. Check out what she said along with the photo…

TheChicSite“I have stretch marks and I wear a bikini. I have a belly that’s permanently flabby from carrying three giant babies and I wear a bikini. My belly button is saggy… (which is something I didn’t even know was possible before!!) and I wear a bikini. I wear a bikini because I’m proud of this body and every mark on it. Those marks prove that I was blessed enough to carry my babies and that flabby tummy means I worked hard to lose what weight I could. I wear a bikini because the only man who’s opinion matters knows what I went through to look this way. That same man says he’s never seen anything sexier than my body, marks and all. They aren’t scars ladies, they’re stripes and you’ve earned them. Flaunt that body with pride!” #HollisHoliday

Rachel mentions in her blog she was considering cropping out her stomach in her Cancun vacation pic before posting it, but she’s never seen another mom on social media show off her stretch marks… I love it. All of it! Being a mother with stretch marks, with permanent “flab,” after carrying babies is something to be proud of!! Here’s a video she just posted just today on the reaction of her bikini pic:

I admire that she was a brave mom to flaunt her mommy tummy in a bikini. Its something that should be know more in the internet world. With mom bloggers, IG fitness freaks, and everything else in social media, its certainly a topic that should be applauded. I salute you Rachel!!

Are you a mommy with stretch marks and a flabby tummy, working hard to tone it? Let me know your journey, and how you were able to slim it down! Let’s support one another and hit the ground running showing awareness in how beautiful the mother body can be, and how hard it is to work it off!

At Home Work Outs

Home GySave money by creating your own personal fitness gym at home! Invest on some space-saver fitness equipment, and enjoy doing work-outs at home while catching up on your favorite TV Shows! (Mine, HGTV’s Fixer Upper & ABC’s Modern Family)

Here’s what you need to get fit: 1) 30 minutes and 2) you.

This workout is basically my warm-up to get the blood flowing, to torch calories and tone muscles in whatever time you have (15 Minutes max!) The key is going all-out. Perform the first exercise at your max intensity for 50 seconds, rest for 10 seconds, and then move to the next exercise (again, as hard and fast as you can). Later on, push yourself to reach the max of 2 minutes. 2 minutes of effort! Then move to the next!

Being pretty frugal, I don’t expect everyone to buy every fitness equipment out there. The fitness equipment I have, is a collection of items I’ve gathered over the course of a few years. My weights are actually my moms, back in the 90s! Many of the below exercises could be done without the equipment as well. If you would like to purchase some fitness equipment, I’d suggest checking out TJMaxx/Marshalls and Ross, before going to the expensive sports store!

2 Minutes Each:

Side Plank With Hip Abduction (Each Leg)

  • With your body leaning towards the couch, and one had as support, side plank, raising one leg – up for a 2 second hold. Repeat for the 2 mins, then switch legs.

Leg Lifts With Ankle Weights (Each Leg)

  • Position on your side, with one leg tucked in. Raising one leg – up for a 2 second hold. Repeat for the 2 mins, then switch legs.

Yoga Ball Extensions (12 o’clock/ 2 o’clock/ and 3 o/clock)

  • Holding a light dumbbell in each hand (5lbs, is what I use), lie face-down on the yoga ball with your stomach and pelvis on the ball, your toes on the floor, and your heels against a wall. Keep your palms facing in. With your legs straight and your core tight, raise your arms forward until they’re in line with your torso. Lower the weights slowly and repeat for 15 reps.

One Leg Squat With Resistance Band

  • Using a door attachment for your resistance band, position a chair a few feet away from the door to get a good distance for your resistance band to support you. Note: The further you are from the door, the more support you’ll get from the resistance band. Sit partiva

Jumping Jacks (Star jumps – is what the Aussie’s call them!)

  • Classic jumping jacks for 2 minutes! Remember to expand those arms!

After completing all five exercises, I’ll guarantee you’ll be sweating. If you have more time, rest for a minute and then continue a few more times. Repeat the sequence. (You’re trying to complete reps of 100!!) Yes! 100!!

Are there any staple work-out routines you follow? Comment below! If you’ve blogged about it, send me the direct link!

Happy Fitness Friday everyone!!

5K Prep

This weekend marks the date of the start of my new running lifestyle! Earlier in February, I signed myself up for two 5K runs this Spring. The first one is this weekend, and the next one will be in May. I strategically planned them a month and a half way form them, so I can mentally and physically prep, and as well as enjoying family weekends and Spring Break which is coming up.

Take a look at my Journey To 30 Monthly Log Here.

This weekends run is the Badger Cove Half 5k/10k Marathon, hosted by BrazenRacing. It’ll be held at the picturesque Del Valle Regional Park in Livermore! From waterfront views under oak groves to panoramic vistas, these courses have a lot to offer, which I’m very excited about!!! I’m extremely excited for this race because its all part of my health and fitness journey, and also I’m doing this run alone. No girlfriend, or wing man, nothing but me, myself and I.

I’ve consistently have been seeing my personal trainer, and have been running every morning. The other morning, I ran at 7AM on a Sunday morning. It was magnificent. The was long, but throughout the entire day I felt energized, awake, and very productive. And we all know, “a Sunday well spent, brings a week of content!”

This weekend, I also have plans to attend a Berkeley wedding of my dear friend. Hosted at an art collective, I’m very eager to see the out come of the two weeks shes been working hard for. Yes, my homegirl has been planning her wedding in just 2 weeks. No, its not a shot-gun wedding! Anyhow, this weekend is going to bring such joy in my life with the start of a new running lifestyle, and to witness my dear friends special day!

Happy Thursday!

Fitness Trainer

What started as an afternoon to a Boba/Milk Tea run, ended up as a moment of realization. Since Derrick and I are both stay at home parents, there are many opportunities for us to grab a drink during the day. Not alcoholic per se. But to grab afternoon coffee or MilkTea. A HongKong style beverage of black tea sweetened with evaporated milk. It’s pretty popular here in the Bay Area, since we live right at the border of the Silicon Valley, there are tons of great Asian Coffee Shops. After purchasing our drinks, we decided to walk around a nearby plaza to pick up some miscellaneous items. Right as we walk in a local grocery store, with our sugary drinks in our hands, we run into our old personal trainer.

The last time we hired our personal trainer was a year and a half ago Spring of 2013. We hired him in fitness and health preparation for a backpacking trip to Thailand, and shortly after we return hiking up Half Dome at Yosemite National Park. With the correct guidance of a personal trainer,  he was able to not only get me down 20lbs under 3 months, but also boost my confidence, educate me in nutritional meals, gain a healthy consistent lifestyle, and also rehab old sports injuries that helped strengthen those untouched muscles.

We caught up with our trainer, reminisced over our last performance on were we left off, and laughed about we’re physically where we were now. Completely embarrassed, (also because we had a high sugary drink at hand), and also having gained a couple pounds, I knew this was a sign. We ended the conversation with scheduling a meet up on a new contact. When, tomorrow.

So here we go, #JourneyTo30. I thought I was able to do this alone, but with the motivation of a personal trainer, and holding down consistency, I’m determined to lose the weight sooner than ever. Having a role model, gaining major encouragement, and having someone to push me to sweat and cry at the same time is what I need.

Let’s make my fat cry shall we?
