Marimekko Autumn Nails

The first day of fall is right around the corner (Sept 23rd!) Try adding in a touch of autumn to your nails too! Usually it’s common for me to get a design on all or at least on each of the ring fingers. This fall I got my nails done with a deep burgundy red, and a autumn inspired floral print on each ring finger. As usual I get inspired through Pinterest, after searching up ‘Fall Nails.’

Here’s the PIN that I found, and requested for…

The original post was from a Japanese blogger named Rei Handa. You can check out her New Nail blog post HERE.

Her inspired nails were initially inspired by the iconic Marimekko pattern.

Unfold Marimekko

Marimekko is a Finnish company, and is a play on words, on ‘Mari’ an anagram of the first name of the company’s founder, Armi Ratia, while ‘mekko’ means ‘dress’ in Finnish. Particularly noted for brightly colored printed fabrics and simple styles, used both in women’s garments and in home furnishings. The two designers in particular, Vuokko Nurmesniemi with bold stripes, and Maija Isola with large simple flowered prints, created hundreds of distinctive patterns and helped to make Marimekko a household name across the world. Overlooking the designs online, it looks like a very high-end IKEA. WHICH is why it looked oh so familiar!! Marimekko provides covers from Bemz, the lovely Swedish folks who produce stylish slipcovers for IKEA‘s sofas and armchairs!!

Here’s my complete nail interoperation that my nail technician was able to do. I requested forest green to replace the black, and stuck with the original concept of flowers and color pallet from Rei Handa’s nail photo.

Very kawaii I might say!!!

Kawaii (かわいい?, [kaw͍aiꜜi], “lovable”, “cute”, or “adorable”) is the quality of cuteness in the context of Japanese culture.

Living Space Inspiration

His & Her Main Space
The past week we’ve extended our stay in our own living room. Daddy just recently ruptured his achilles tendon, so sitting and watching movies on Netflix, and reading has been our current home life for the next few weeks. As I move furniture around to make space, and sleep on the chaise of the sectional, I keep looking around our current living room in search of new living room update opportunities. I have also been looking at some of the furniture Roanoke has to offer which has whetted my appetite for a bit of a living room makeover.
I’m always open for new projects around the house. From distressing wood furniture I picked up at the thrift store, or a Craigslist purchase I’ve recently made. But, my favorite projects have been no-cost (free) decorating!! Here are a few low or no budget ideas to update the living room:
  • Freshening up pillows
    • Toss in new pillows! These not so dominant decorative pieces that pull color from drapes, rugs, or artwork!
  • Underfoot Style
    • A graphic rug is a simple way to make a big statement.
  • Rearrange Furniture
    • For a free update, rearrange the furniture you have. Experiment with the room’s layout.
    • Think about how you can have a comfortable conversation with someone sitting on another piece of furniture.
  • Light It Up
    • Add sparkle and drama with a pair of matching table or floor lamps!
  • Artwork Statement Pieces
    • Expand your shopping list to include new lighting, interesting accents such as pillows or a decorative throw, and a piece of artwork for a focal point.
    • Create a DIY modern art piece yourself! Mod Podge a photo on canvas, frame an old vinyl record, the skies the limit!

So those are a few of my low or zero budget decorating tips to update the living room. Overall, start by shopping in your own home; there may be an unused bookcase in the basement or forgotten end tables stacked in the garage. Of course, I’d love to own a Restoration Hardware New Marbella Right Arm Sectional, or a Z Gallerie Ava 8 Mirrored Dresser. But financially that isn’t in the budget. So quality furniture should be treated as an investment. That being said if you’d like to own some of your own quality furniture even if you are on a budget AO Home have some wonderful and reasonably priced furniture for you to transform your living room.

Living rooms are where you entertain guests and spend quality time with family, things like making lighting key for setting the proper mood. Personally, I like lighting candles. Start shopping around the house, and hopefully you can create a nice new fresh living space, without spending a dime!

Happy decorating!

Craigslist IKEA Duktig Hack

Ikea Duktig Hack Before & After

Everyone. With the new year here I’m creatively charged, and the juices are flowing. The first week of 2015, I’ve focused the week on Craiglist Ikea Hack. If you’re an Ikea lover like I am, you probably have heard of Ikea Hackers. Ikea Hackers is a site about modifications on and repurposing of Ikea products. Hacks, because it may be as simple as adding an embellishment, some others may require power tools and lots of ingenuity. (Read more about Ikea Hackers here.)

With Ikea Hackers and Pinterest, I’ve obsessed about this one particular children’s product for years. The Ikea Duktig. During the holidays I was considering purchasing the product, but couldn’t persuade myself to buy it. Then lightning struck. Why don’t I check Craigslist? This product is quite popular on Craigslist, and could be found for about $50-$80. With my luck, I consistently found the kitchen every week being sold in different cities, all more that 40mins away. On Craigslist, I really haggle and see if the seller would be interested in bringing the price down since I’ll be traveling. For weeks, I kept refreshing my browser in search for the kitchen.

Christmas came to a near, and my idea of getting the kitchen was a fail. But I still pursued to look for the kitchen. Come New Years Eve I found it!!!! Someone in my area was selling it for $35!!! The post was only 3 hours old, so I knew I had a good chance. After exchanging emails, texts and phone calls with the mother selling the kitchen, I was able to schedule the pick-up New Years Eve! Who does Craigslist pick-ups on NYE? ME! I was THAT determined. The seller even offered if I’d like to come later after the holidays, but I wanted to take no chances to loosing the exact product, at the perfect price! Seriously people. I’ve gone through so many great items that have slipped through my fingers, just because of rescheduling, or not frequently checking my email. Craigslist is pretty cut throat. You see something..Go get it.

I bought this IKEA Kid Play Kitchen on Craigslist for $35 (Retails $100). With a missing backing, a few paint chips, water damage, and sticker residue, I saw the potential of this dearly loved play kitchen. The mother before me bought it a few years ago from a consignment store, and now her son has outgrown the kitchen and wanted to sell the kitchen for a new LEGO set.

I sold the boys old clothes at a consignment store and received $40 in cash, and used the money on materials to redecorate. Here are the new upgrades:

-Whiteboard Back Panel ($1.98, HomeDepot)

-Decorative  Peel & Stick Smart Tile ($5.97 each, 10.25×9.13″, Smart Tile in Muertto Beige, HomeDepot)

-3 LED Easy Push Light (AAA Battery Operated,  Ikea Ramsta)

The biggest impact to this facelift was the new addition to the backsplash using the Smart Tile!! This unique product was easy to install and saves you time and money. The do-it-yourself peel and stick tile concept. The product is so easy to handle, cut and maintain. The tiles can be installed in minutes over a clean and sleek surface without any mess or specialized tools.

I’m so happy how this  turned out, and how fast it took to do it! It’s certainly a great kick start to a great year filled with diy low budget transformations!! I can’t wait to share more with you!!

Do you have the Ikea Duktig for your kids?

Let me know if you’ve added any modifications to yours! I’d love to read about it!!
