Stay-At-Home Mom Flatline

I became a stay-at-home mom at the age of 24, after my second son was born back in 2010. My boyfriend has been blessed to be able to provide for our family, while I can stay at home with the children. At the beginning stages of stay-at-home living, we were in a small 2 bedroom apartment. I’d drop off my boyfriend to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), and my older son to daycare. I’d stay home and cater to all household needs, as well as my newborn baby boy. Eat, sleep, pump, prep meals on repeat. That was my routine.

3 months passed, and we moved into a 5 bedroom home that was provided by my parents paying a small portion of rent helping them out with their mortgage. It was definitely a steal here in the Bay Area -especially being extremely close to the Dumbarton Bridge, which connects the East Bay to the Peninsula including cities such as Redwood City, Palo Alto, and Half Moon Bay just to name a few…

After the move, my older son entered Kindergarten, and my boyfriend was hired at a social media marketing company that helped advertisers manage their pages on Facebook. The company was at their early start-up phase, and was conveniently located across the bridge in Palo Alto. I stayed home, continued to care for my boys and in a larger home. Cleaning was exceedingly difficult, more room = more mess.

My sons grew older, birthdays and career milestones were celebrated, while I just stayed a flat momentum of personal growth. Watching my children grow, my boyfriends career grow, and square-footage of our home grow.

We’ve then moved out of my parents property, my son entered 1st grade at a new school, new job opportunities for daddy. We are now at a new routine change. My youngest is now in Pre-K, the other in entering 3rd and the boyfriend works remotely from home. The time off opportunity starts now. I’ve failed in increase the past four years. Any mother can understand that we are all opportunist. At times we have absolute no time for even sitting. A stay-at-home mom’s life is all about the house and your children. At times I literally stand while I eat, and I purposely wear gym wear majority of the time, because I feel like I’m actually working out while cleaning, running errands, and always always always doing things for others around the house, and for the house.

As I mentioned in my Journey To 30, 28 wasn’t so great. It was the actual time it really hit me. I’m approaching my 30s, and I want something to show for. …For myself. No one else. I want to challenge myself, try something new, something different, an outlet for me to express myself, personally and creatively. A possible way to provide for my family,  which does not eat away time from my family, that is Number ONE.  Being a stay-at-home mom doesn’t always get any credibility unless someone truly knows what its like. I’m not asking for a high-five, or gold sticker. I just want time for myself for personal growth.

Socially, financially, and emotionally, it’s hard to find my village of moms, and the support. So I always went to the internet. Mommy Blogs, Facebook groups, online forums, MeetUps and YouTube. I’ve found my community there. It was “live,” it’s real, it’s relatable. I gravitate towards mothers/women who share the same lifestyle as me, and have similar interests. There are so many different types of people out there, personalities, and you won’t always mesh well with all of them. And thats ok. There will be times searching for that outlet will remain static…But I pushed myself to keep searching, and improving myself in the mean time.

Bottom line, I’m done being at a flatline. I refuse to continue to fail to increase; to stop remaining static as a stay-at-home mom. Here goes to my new creative challenge and on going personal project.

Being myself and improving myself.

In preparation of my 10Ks, I’ve been running just about every morning. I usually wake up between the 5:30-5:45 hour and begin my day in gear of a morning run. Weather it’s by myself around the neighborhood, or with my 4 year old preschooler in the jogging stroller. I’ve accepted to do whatever it takes to get in my run everyday. 3 miles (5K) is the minimum is my goal. But more miles is always encouraged.

It’s all painful. It’s cold. I hate it. But in the end, I’m happy I did it.

Morning Routine

Here’s a short clip of what my morning routine looks like from my Snapchat.

I wouldn’t be able to wake up without my boyfriend Derrick. He works from remotely home, and his job is currently located in Florida. Being on East Coast time, makes him wake up, and relocate from out bedroom to his home office. Once he’s up, I’m up. And I’m so happy to have his work, kick-start me to get to work. #WorkIT

Shed’s Off Like Water

Weigh In

Current Weight at 5/15/2015

In the beginning of my health transformation I was struggling with side planks, sit-ups, and could barely lift 15 pound weight over my shoulders. It was so hard for me to vision a future healthier and happier me. Starting off at 144lbs and out of breath doing side planks at 30seconds – made me want to become stronger and stronger. Sweating so hard after a 6mile run, and after a workout session with my trainer, made me feel so high. A healthy high.

After finally getting over the the 10 pound hump, my appetite has definitely curved, and exercise had became a staple in my everyday daily life. There are weeks when I hit it hard everyday. Some days, I may slip due to resting my muscles due to being sore, or by scheduled appointments, and household errands. But those days I wasn’t able to go to the park to run, I end up working out sometime later in the day from home. Mountain climbers, body builders, 2 minute warm-ups, and so on. I create room and space in my living room, and do my exercises while watching TV.

This is just a weigh-in check post, to document how I’ve been feeling lately. I want to remind myself to never give up. If you’re going through a transformation like myself, create a contract to yourself, or follow yourself taking a pictures. I’m tired of the old me, the memories of the old me, and the feeling of that me. Continue looking forward, be persistent. I want to inspire others, because I feel my story is so relatable. Before children I was 115lbs, and after carrying two children in my body, and a poor diet afterwards, its time to take charge. Food is fuel. Make it good food.

Spring Break Body: Featuring TheChicSite

With Spring break around the corner, pressures of having the bikini body are in the air. Target is already selling their summer swim suits, which by the way are totally adorable!) While currently working out with my personal trainer 3 times a week, and running everyday, my goals are coming closer, with losing weight, and dropping my body fat percentage! Just seeing my trainer already 4 times this month I’ve dropped 4 lbs and 10% body fat! That’s significantly faster than my first contract I had with him back in 2013!!

This time around my goals have become way more full-grown. Instead of searching for that bikini body, I’m in search of endurance, and strength in my knees and ankles to secure me from injury during my runs. Over the time of being a mom the past 7 in a half years, I’ve never really had goals to have a bikini body. The stretch marks from pregnancy have also numbed me from that goal. It was never really a priority, yet, I didn’t really have any big problem with it. Not until I saw Rachel from The Chic Site.

Here’s her Bikini Picture that she had posted on her FB Fan page just last week. I love how she exposed her mom body, with confidence, a huge smile, while projecting complete happiness and joy, being proud of her body. Check out what she said along with the photo…

TheChicSite“I have stretch marks and I wear a bikini. I have a belly that’s permanently flabby from carrying three giant babies and I wear a bikini. My belly button is saggy… (which is something I didn’t even know was possible before!!) and I wear a bikini. I wear a bikini because I’m proud of this body and every mark on it. Those marks prove that I was blessed enough to carry my babies and that flabby tummy means I worked hard to lose what weight I could. I wear a bikini because the only man who’s opinion matters knows what I went through to look this way. That same man says he’s never seen anything sexier than my body, marks and all. They aren’t scars ladies, they’re stripes and you’ve earned them. Flaunt that body with pride!” #HollisHoliday

Rachel mentions in her blog she was considering cropping out her stomach in her Cancun vacation pic before posting it, but she’s never seen another mom on social media show off her stretch marks… I love it. All of it! Being a mother with stretch marks, with permanent “flab,” after carrying babies is something to be proud of!! Here’s a video she just posted just today on the reaction of her bikini pic:

I admire that she was a brave mom to flaunt her mommy tummy in a bikini. Its something that should be know more in the internet world. With mom bloggers, IG fitness freaks, and everything else in social media, its certainly a topic that should be applauded. I salute you Rachel!!

Are you a mommy with stretch marks and a flabby tummy, working hard to tone it? Let me know your journey, and how you were able to slim it down! Let’s support one another and hit the ground running showing awareness in how beautiful the mother body can be, and how hard it is to work it off!

Goals For The Week

Every Sunday evening, I sit at the dining table with my notebooks, journals, and laptops all open. Yes, laptops – because, photoshop currently only runs on one of my machines. I look over the weeks upcoming  family schedule for the week, and create my lists. The lists include meal planning, kids little league practice & game schedules, along with fitness routine work-outs. I also create my weekly grocery list, and goal list. This probably takes me a couple hours in the day to complete, because the kids schedules consistently change with game changes, and carpool arrangements. I’m typically in and out of doing it, between folding laundry, and just relaxing with the kids.

Aside from our family week schedule, I have my own personal weekly goals documented down with my week schedule. The past two months, my goals have normally stayed the same, incorporating my new health and fitness lifestyle. Here’s a list what my weekly goals typically look like:

Weekly Goals

How did you do on last week’s goals? What are your goals for this week?

I’d love to have you share your progress on last week’s goals and your goals for this coming week in the comments. If you’ve blogged about it, leave your direct link below. Let’s cheer each other on to live purposeful and productive lives!

Fitnessista

Like everyone I’m on Instagram and follow my friends, creative artisans, bloggers, celebrities and fitness pros. Fitness gym accounts on Instagram, are certainly a guilty pleasure of mine. I not only use them as a motivational reminder, but also as a resource of exercises I can do at home or at the gym. (I obsess over the fitness videos!)

Celeb Gym Ladies

As I started once again with my personal trainer, we talk about fitness goals. The last time I was with my trainer, he got me into shape in preparation for a Thailand backpacking trip, and Half Dome hike. This time around, there are no future travel plans or major hikes to conquer. He suggested I register myself in local half marathon runs. He and I both believe I can do it, but I’m looking for more of greater fulfillment for myself. Not saying that the half marathons are not good enough for me, but I’m in search of something more.. FYI I did register for a local Mermaid Run.

My trainer recommended that I search up bodies, I’d like to be like and post them somewhere around the house. That evening I Googled up my favorite celebrities, but wasn’t really happy with all the red carpet photos, extravagant clothes, and beautiful photoshoots. I needed to feel more relatable to my favorite stars. Everything I was looking at was all cosmetic, and smoke and mirrors. I adjusted my search and searched up my fav celebrities in their gym outfits, and candids of them walking out of their gym. Celebrities including: Lea Michele, Jessica Simpson, Khloe Kardashian, Nicole Richie, and Jessica Biel.

Fitness CelebsAfter viewing numbers of celebrities walking out of their gyms, or walking to their current work out, it occurred to me these women make it a lifestyle for themselves to stay in shape. Why can’t I? I did once before, and can do it again, but I have to find the will power to also keep it off. And that’s how my first goal transpired.

Within the first week of March, I’ve already seen my trainer 4 times. That’s just about every other day. Our goals together are to strip the weight off within half a contract. Muscle building, correctives, and also some physical therapy. The days I’m not seeing my trainer I’m at the gym doing cardio, or my homework. 30 minutes of running, sit-ups every hour, and eating every 2 hours is just the few tid bits of my healthy lifestyle.

I was reading one of my favorite blogs: AndKathleen and she had a post on why she works out. Here’s her answer…

“Why do I work out? Because I believe if I can sculpt my body into a zombie-killing machine then I will prove to myself that transformation + discipline can accomplish any vision I set my sites on. And right now, I have some pretty big vision.

So now I have my why. I like it. But I still want to look like a zombie-slaying badass in a bikini.”

I always find fitness moms so motivation. What’s something that you had to learn the hard way with health and fitness? How often do you train now? Do you fit into a certain mold (runner, swimmer, dancer, etc), or are you a little all over the place like yours truly?

As always, I’m excited to read your comments! Happy Friday!

Fitness Trainer

What started as an afternoon to a Boba/Milk Tea run, ended up as a moment of realization. Since Derrick and I are both stay at home parents, there are many opportunities for us to grab a drink during the day. Not alcoholic per se. But to grab afternoon coffee or MilkTea. A HongKong style beverage of black tea sweetened with evaporated milk. It’s pretty popular here in the Bay Area, since we live right at the border of the Silicon Valley, there are tons of great Asian Coffee Shops. After purchasing our drinks, we decided to walk around a nearby plaza to pick up some miscellaneous items. Right as we walk in a local grocery store, with our sugary drinks in our hands, we run into our old personal trainer.

The last time we hired our personal trainer was a year and a half ago Spring of 2013. We hired him in fitness and health preparation for a backpacking trip to Thailand, and shortly after we return hiking up Half Dome at Yosemite National Park. With the correct guidance of a personal trainer,  he was able to not only get me down 20lbs under 3 months, but also boost my confidence, educate me in nutritional meals, gain a healthy consistent lifestyle, and also rehab old sports injuries that helped strengthen those untouched muscles.

We caught up with our trainer, reminisced over our last performance on were we left off, and laughed about we’re physically where we were now. Completely embarrassed, (also because we had a high sugary drink at hand), and also having gained a couple pounds, I knew this was a sign. We ended the conversation with scheduling a meet up on a new contact. When, tomorrow.

So here we go, #JourneyTo30. I thought I was able to do this alone, but with the motivation of a personal trainer, and holding down consistency, I’m determined to lose the weight sooner than ever. Having a role model, gaining major encouragement, and having someone to push me to sweat and cry at the same time is what I need.

Let’s make my fat cry shall we?
