Decorating With Yellow

Everyone. I have a new love in my life. It’s the color yellow. Now, it’s one of those relationships where the love has always been there, (because my current living room is actually already yellow themed.) BUT just recently, after my last DIY Dollar Tree Coasters I recently posted —while I was choosing the decorative paper for my coasters, I realized how much I really gravitate towards the color. I look around my home, and my even my latest Craigslist purchase were the color yellow. I’ve fallen deep in love with yellow. Take a look as my yellow fever grows within my home.

My yellow itch was my first Craigslist purchase of 2017. Just 3 days in into the new year, I was on Craigslist like a fat girl on cake. Trying to find, things people were trying to get rid of after the holidays. From reject gifts, or old furniture people are tired of. I’ve been in the market for 2 new bar stools because the current ones I had were too tall for my kitchen island.

At last, I found some cool modern yellow wood stools on Craigslist. The listing was in my local area, and brand NEW. Brand New people!! Also, it was a pair sold just for $80! That’s how much Target is selling it for just for one stool alone! I knew this was fate!!! I couldn’t help it, but jump on the opportunity and contact the seller for these two yellow bar stools!!!

Here’s the link for the bar stool I purchased. It’s currently at Target.

Ideal for casual entertaining, it has a high fan back and footrest to help keep your guests feel comfortable. The stool’s seat is carved into a shallow saddle shape for even more comfort. The next pop of color item in my home is my year round yellow wreath filled with wild flowers. I had purchased this wreath awhile back at HomeGoods, as I was in need for a Spring season wreath for my front door. It’s now the home on my garage door next to the front entry way.

I’ve also added in a Target ornament from last holiday season. There was a series of ornaments with an adventure theme and had two different variations of this ornament. I had purchased it on sale (from $3 to$1.50), and casually found a home for it placed in the middle of my spring time yellow wreath other than being with the rest of my holiday ornaments.

I thought the quote of “blaze your own trail,” on the little banner made sense as it would be the phrase you read going out the door.

Thoughtful?! I think yes!

Here’s more of my yellow obsession — my latest post of the DIY DollarTree Coasters. Yellow, bright, and super playful!

Gold Accents

I’ve been all about gold accents around my house!! They just bring a a simple modern clean look to the home. Gold accents also go great against color!! Sometimes when color is missing, hints and sprinkles of gold items help tie in the room together. Now, I know decorating with gold can get intimidating. It may be too bold for you…Hey, I was the same way.. So I started off with gold stapler from Target. (Yeah, you know that Nate Berkus Limited Edition Stapler that everyone has. Especially the gold scissors.)

Yes. I started off with something as small as a simple gold office accessory. And honestly guys, it doesn’t take that much to get the love of gold to get going. The obsession kept growing as I stepped into every retailer, and always saw gold accents, decor, accessories everywhere.

During my last Craigslist flip of my bamboo desk, I styled the blue lagoon desk with some Target Threshold gold accents.

Decorating with gold accents don’t have to expensive too. Of course there are amazing decorative items at West Elm, Z Gallerie, and Restoration Hardware, but let me tell you. There will never be a time I shop at those retailers. Clearly because there is no way in hell I can justify any of their prices. So let me start off with some ideas on gold items you can DIY, or look out for when on a budget. Just remember, gold decor doesn’t have to be expensive.

DIY Gold

If you haven’t picked up yet on my blog, I’m in love with DIY projects, and being budget friendly as well. If I can make it vs buying it full price, I will. With that said, a good DIY project is so much full filling. If you like being creative, and enjoy the process of making something awesome– DIY it! Incorporating gold accessories don’t have to be items that sit on the shelf to be pretty and sterile. Make something, and place it in your home, being proud of your work. Try making a piece of art work using gold acrylic paint or spray paint or a functional piece too! Some ideas could be like these fantastic Pinterest finds:

  1. Geometric DIY Art (By: Sum Of Their Stories)
  2. Gold Painted Elephant (By: Build-Basic)
  3. Gold Dipped Bar Stools (By: HoneyBearLane)
  4. DIY Mirror Frame (By: Pretty Providence)
  5. DIY Abstract Art With A Golden Touch (By: LollyJane)
  6. Himmeli Geometric Sculpture (By: Ash And Crafts)

Street Cheap Gold Decor:

When I say street cheap, I mean free to less than $10 to basically nothing! It’s also goes with the Gold themed DIY. When you’re on the hunt for secondhand keep a special eye out for things you love. From gold textiles, figurines, and if you’re lucky, and vintage find! All these items and also be flipped, or they just need a good cleaning. Here are places to search if you’re looking for a “canvas” for a GOLD diy project.

  1. Thrift Stores
  2. Flea Markets
  3. Garage Sales
  4. Craigslist
  5. DollarTree/99 Cent Store
  6. Target DollarSpot

Affordable Gold | Retailers:

I understand not everyone is into the hunt through secondhand. It’s just not you to search through thrift stores or flea markets. Here’s a list of my favorite go to budget friendly retail shops. (They’re also my favorite spots to go shopping at during the holidays!) —-Psssst, when gold decor comes out REAL hard.

  1. Marshalls/ TJ Maxx/ HomeGoods
  2. Ross
  3. IKEA
  4. Target
  5. Cost Plus World Market

Living Space Inspiration

His & Her Main Space
The past week we’ve extended our stay in our own living room. Daddy just recently ruptured his achilles tendon, so sitting and watching movies on Netflix, and reading has been our current home life for the next few weeks. As I move furniture around to make space, and sleep on the chaise of the sectional, I keep looking around our current living room in search for new living room update opportunities.
I’m always open for new projects around the house. From distressing wood furniture I picked up at the thrift store, or a Craigslist purchase I’ve recently made. But, my favorite projects have been no-cost (free) decorating!! Here are a few low or no budget ideas to update the living room:
  • Freshening up pillows
    • Toss in new pillows! These not so dominant decorative pieces that pull color from drapes, rugs, or artwork!
  • Underfoot Style
    • A graphic rug is a simple way to make a big statement.
  • Rearrange Furniture
    • For a free update, rearrange the furniture you have. Experiment with the room’s layout.
    • Think about how you can have a comfortable conversation with someone sitting on another piece of furniture.
  • Light It Up
    • Add sparkle and drama with a pair of matching table or floor lamps!
  • Artwork Statement Pieces
    • Expand your shopping list to include new lighting, interesting accents such as pillows or a decorative throw, and a piece of artwork for a focal point.
    • Create a DIY modern art piece yourself! Mod Podge a photo on canvas, frame an old vinyl record, the skies the limit!

So those are a few of my low or zero budget decorating tips to update the living room. Overall, start by shopping in your own home; there may be an unused bookcase in the basement or forgotten end tables stacked in the garage. Of course, I’d love to own a Restoration Hardware New Marbella Right Arm Sectional, or a Z Gallerie Ava 8 Mirrored Dresser. But financially that isn’t in the budget. So quality furniture should be treated as an investment.

Living rooms are where you entertain guests and spend quality time with family, things like making lighting key for setting the proper mood. Personally, I like lighting candles. Start shopping around the house, and hopefully you can create a nice new fresh living space, without spending a dime!

Happy decorating!
