Gold Accents

I’ve been all about gold accents around my house!! They just bring a a simple modern clean look to the home. Gold accents also go great against color!! Sometimes when color is missing, hints and sprinkles of gold items help tie in the room together. Now, I know decorating with gold can get intimidating. It may be too bold for you…Hey, I was the same way.. So I started off with gold stapler from Target. (Yeah, you know that Nate Berkus Limited Edition Stapler that everyone has. Especially the gold scissors.)

Yes. I started off with something as small as a simple gold office accessory. And honestly guys, it doesn’t take that much to get the love of gold to get going. The obsession kept growing as I stepped into every retailer, and always saw gold accents, decor, accessories everywhere.

During my last Craigslist flip of my bamboo desk, I styled the blue lagoon desk with some Target Threshold gold accents.

Decorating with gold accents don’t have to expensive too. Of course there are amazing decorative items at West Elm, Z Gallerie, and Restoration Hardware, but let me tell you. There will never be a time I shop at those retailers. Clearly because there is no way in hell I can justify any of their prices. So let me start off with some ideas on gold items you can DIY, or look out for when on a budget. Just remember, gold decor doesn’t have to be expensive.

DIY Gold

If you haven’t picked up yet on my blog, I’m in love with DIY projects, and being budget friendly as well. If I can make it vs buying it full price, I will. With that said, a good DIY project is so much full filling. If you like being creative, and enjoy the process of making something awesome– DIY it! Incorporating gold accessories don’t have to be items that sit on the shelf to be pretty and sterile. Make something, and place it in your home, being proud of your work. Try making a piece of art work using gold acrylic paint or spray paint or a functional piece too! Some ideas could be like these fantastic Pinterest finds:

  1. Geometric DIY Art (By: Sum Of Their Stories)
  2. Gold Painted Elephant (By: Build-Basic)
  3. Gold Dipped Bar Stools (By: HoneyBearLane)
  4. DIY Mirror Frame (By: Pretty Providence)
  5. DIY Abstract Art With A Golden Touch (By: LollyJane)
  6. Himmeli Geometric Sculpture (By: Ash And Crafts)

Street Cheap Gold Decor:

When I say street cheap, I mean free to less than $10 to basically nothing! It’s also goes with the Gold themed DIY. When you’re on the hunt for secondhand keep a special eye out for things you love. From gold textiles, figurines, and if you’re lucky, and vintage find! All these items and also be flipped, or they just need a good cleaning. Here are places to search if you’re looking for a “canvas” for a GOLD diy project.

  1. Thrift Stores
  2. Flea Markets
  3. Garage Sales
  4. Craigslist
  5. DollarTree/99 Cent Store
  6. Target DollarSpot

Affordable Gold | Retailers:

I understand not everyone is into the hunt through secondhand. It’s just not you to search through thrift stores or flea markets. Here’s a list of my favorite go to budget friendly retail shops. (They’re also my favorite spots to go shopping at during the holidays!) —-Psssst, when gold decor comes out REAL hard.

  1. Marshalls/ TJ Maxx/ HomeGoods
  2. Ross
  3. IKEA
  4. Target
  5. Cost Plus World Market

What are your favorite gold items to decorate with? Are you a gold DIYer? Or do you just buy from your favorite store who has a wide selection of gold accented pieces? Comment below!

There, you can see what’s currently going on, and usually a good indicator on what’s to come on an upcoming post. Sometimes, I get inspired by you guys! Yes YOU!! All those questions, come to me, and make me want to create a blog post covering all your questions!!

If you’ve been following me for a while, autumn decorating is one of my favorites throughout the entire year! The orange spices, colorful hues, mustard yellows, and warm glow to decorative pieces give such cool and calm energy to the home. Also, my favorite feeling…Warm and cozy. Currently, in Sacramento, the temperature is still hot and toasty, but that wont stop me from decorating!!!! As some people love to easily jump into Halloween decor, I like to ease in autumn. Pumpkins, toasty faux leaves, cool metals, and yarn tapestries are what I have. This year, I’ve incorporated many of my gold accents as well.

You can check out my post on decorating with Gold Accents HERE.

Last year, I wrote a post on being Frugal in Fall. This post, is quite similar, but just an updated version on how I’ve been styling my new home here in Sunny Sacramento. (If you’re new to my blog, welcome! You can catch up with my move to Sac HERE.)

Now, I’m a huge thrift store shopper, garage sale extraordinaire, an avid Craigslist shopper, and flea market goer. Antiques, vintage, secondhand, sold-as-is, and clearance are my main shopping goals before I go full retail. You can call me fabulously frugal. If you walk into my house, I promise you every since piece, item, furniture, picture frame, shelf, all once came with an awesome price, and pretty cool story at finding it. It’s literally my hobby, and job as the head of the home decorating team of my household.

Let’s start off my goals at approaching to shop for the fall season.

  • Walk Into Target
Yes, you read it. Check out Target. Or World Market. Wherever a festive display of home decorating pieces are neatly and specifically arranged to make you buy. CAUTION: You may have to hold yourself back from purchasing all the cute items. BUT you don’t want to. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be reading my blog post at this moment.
Walking into Target or Cost Plus World Market, is to gather inspiration. See items, up front, how they styled it (Props to all the visual merchandisers out there!!! I was once one, looong ago…) See the small vignette styled pieces. Also, take a close look at the prices. Those prices are what we’re trying to avoid.
  • Price Check
Once you’ve gathered inspiration, go directly to the clearance/sale section. It’s usually at the back end of the store, or at the end of every aisle. See if there are any pieces from last year’s collection, or inventory they may be trying to get rid of.

Above picture:

Here are a list of items int he picture above – on where I purchased my autumn accessories.

(TOP Picture) Bronze metal pumpkin candle holder, Savers Thrift Store $2.99, faux pumpkin, Flea Market $0.99

(BOTTOM Left Photo) Leaf Candy Dish, Savers Thrift Store, $1.99, Outdoor Glass Gold Lantern, Target, Clearance $9.99 (Originally $19.99), Gold Tray, Target $11.99 (Originally $17.99)

(BOTTOM Right Photo) Pumpkin candy jar, Savers $3.99, faux pumpkin, Flea Market $0.99

Folks, total everything up, that’s about $30 dollars! Minus, my gold Threshold trey, which I’ve had the past 4 years. Strictly, all fall decorations were a total of $20!! Cover 3 different areas in my home.

photo-sep-20-4-16-14-pm

This photo above is a vignette I’ve created on the top of an IKEA china cabinet I have near my dining area. I styled 2 wooden crates stacked on top of each other, paired with 3 birchwood branches. Both the crates, and birch wood branches were purchased on Craigslist!!!!! YES!! Craigslist! A common source where I purchase a lot of my best finds. Even the IKEA china cabinet it sits on was from Craigslist!!

  • What To Search
A fews years back I was into event styling. I’d help style, and assists a wedding planning in San Francisco over the weekends as well as being hired independently through close family and friends for their parties. With not much of huge budget, I’d source out to Craigslist and search for what I was looking for in particular. (i.e: Wedding Decor, Rustic pieces, crates, escort card holder you name it!!!!) From there I’d find countless brides, getting rid of their wedding stuff!! After that, the rest is history, and over the years, I’ve collected many, many pieces, which have become my festive/seasonal decorating.
  • Strangers Trash
Oh honey, that’s where you’re wrong. It all depends on what you’re looking for. How is it that I’ve managed to collect so much through all these years? All secondhand, from people who no longed needed it, and just styled in new ways!!

So before you end up buying the entire home decor collection at Target, check your local thrift stores, garage sales, or Craigslist. You’ll never know what you’ll find! Happy hunting, and happy decorating!! Stay tuned for more decorating tips, and ideas this month all about fall!!!

Decorating

I love decorating! I’m actually semi-educated in Interior Design! I swoon over textiles, furniture, and organization! My house is always changing. Just like how I like updating my mugs! I go through obsessions of styles, patterns, current trends, and always shop with a frugal budget. I’m constantly adding new things to my shelf, re-arranging, and also styling with decorative boxes, baskets, and throw blankets. Who doesn’t enjoy a good throw blanket?! This is the area of my blog, where you could see all the corners, book shelves, and desk organization!

Simple Christmas Style

When it comes down to holiday decorating, I like to keep it simple, and easy to manage. I’m not one to be called a full minimalist, but I like to practice a few traits and habits of one. We all know it’s so easy to fall into the habit of buying more and more. Especially us American’s. We love the satisfaction of purchasing merchandise. And when it comes down to the holidays, we all go over the limits of gifts and also holiday decor. This post, I’d like to share a few small purchases I made for this years Christmas season, as well as some changes I’ve done to adapt to our new home here in Sacramento.

  • The Living Room

With having a new space for “living,” there actually isn’t enough living in this area. I’ve come to realize, that having a 5 bedroom home, with multiple living spaces, and a backyard that connects to the garage, there’s a few living spaces that just don’t get love and attention they fully need. The main living room as become the main focal point for Christmas this season. It’s the room that has the most windows, the staircase connects to it, as well as the front door and garage door entry.

Musical Tunes

During the process of putting up our Christmas tree, my husband and I also decided to add in one of our record players. Adding the record player, was our excuse to add in more life, as it will project musical tunes towards the dining table.

Small Accents/Low Effort

I also added a few little tiny accents to the living room sitting on the bookshelf of the record player. All things I already owned, that just needed a spot to be displayed.

  • The Staircase

I’ve utilized the staircase banister to hold our stockings. Previously in our last home, we unfortunately did not have a fireplace to place the usual garland of string lights, and stockings. I’d simply, push pin them into the main wall of our main living room. This year, I wasn’t so inclined to utilize our fireplace to display the stockings.

  • Craigslist China Hutch

We currently have an IKEA China Hutch, which I purchase on Craigslist 3 years ago. It was needed for our previous house, but I currently no longer have an attachment to it in our current house. This year, as I figure out how to use it, or entertain the thought of letting it go, I’ve used it to display our holiday cards.

  1. Using a piece of twine and mini laundry clips (Purchased at Daiso/Michael’s Craft Store)
I did the same thing above my buffet table using string lights (Purchased from Target, earlier this year)
  2. If you’ve seen my Fall Decorations, you’ll notice have a group of birch wood branches. I used them again for the holidays, keeping them above my china hutch again, mixed with my light garland, a holiday branch, and stacking decorative boxes from my mom. Oh! Not to mention, pinecones! Lots of pinecones were sprinkled around too!

  • Christmas Cards

My Christmas cards were hung on string lights, that I use year-round. I pinned them using snowflake laundry pins I purchased at the DollarTree this year.

  • Buffet Table

My buffet table, also known as our board game storage, holds a few picture frames, a gold candelabra (Purchased this year from Ross for $12.99), as well as a set of candelabra/ Deer candle holders (also purchased this year from Michael’s Craft Store using a 50% off Coupon!!)

Here’s what the buffet table and mirror looks like at night…

So that’s all

Budget Friendly Living Room

I was going through my storage bins in my garage, putting Halloween decor away from my living room, when I realized many of the item’s purchased were from all budget friendly stores. My decorative pieces all came from a Thrift store, as all my anchored/staple living room pieces were LITERALLY all coming from a budget friendly source. With having a small budget, to basically no budget at all, styling with whatever you have or even a few bucks, you can definietly achieve a simplistic living room chic look.

Before the holidays kick in and your newsfeed is cluttered with Thanksgiving anything, and Pinterest inspiration, I thought this would be a great opportunity, to plug in this post of the “transitional” time in decorating. Setting back to your living room, before the next seasonal change. Many of us, may be putting away all our spiderwebs, candlesticks, and skulls, but a few of us, may still be at a clean slate of no sign of holiday decorating. I get it, holiday decorating can get expensive. So why bother buying it, when you haven’t established your unique style to your living room just yet? Here’s my few tips on decorating your living room on a slim budget!

Pin

Here is small list of my budget friendly go-to’s for living room decorating! I cannot stress enough how much good stuff I find, every time I make my visit to these oh so favorite spots of mine.

  • Target
We all love Target. Only thing is, everyone loves Target, so if you continue purchasing e v e r y t h i n g there, the possibility of someone else (a friend, neighbor, co-working, or even family member will have it too!) Who wants that?! Be different, have your own unique sense of style. Check out their Dollar Spot, and aisle end caps of CLEARANCE items. Also, know your Target’s Markdown Schedule!!Usually….its:Thursday – Housewares & Decor

  • WalMart
The prices at WalMart cannot be beaten for brand new kitchenware items. Particular celebrity brands love teaming up with big chain department stores especially in the houseware department –so keep a look out for that!
  • Ross
Many great decorative pieces can be found at Ross, also great quality bedding can be found. Don’t get flustered if the mess is too much. Remember it’s all about the hunt. Ross isn’t suppose to be a Nordstrom! That’s why it’s cheap and affordable!

  • Local Furniture Shops
See this Craigslist ad?! It’s actually my sofa!!! Checking out local furniture shops in your area gives you an opportunity to support local family owned businesses, vs the big time home stores.Craigslist
  • Craigslist
Craigslist is my NUMBER ONE source of anything shopping for the home or kitchen, or basically anything DIY, or ready to flip. It’s all about the key words!! Search out of the box key words, or outside sources that may be relatable to what you want.
    Example:
“CB2, Restoration Hardware, West Elm, Etsy, UrbanOutfitters, World Market, Rustic….”
This coffee table was purchased from Craigslist for only $25! After careful searching on the site, I was able to find a coffee table that actually ties in with my new sofa!Last but not least the one store that I once would visit 2-3 times year, now I’ve visited 2-3 times a month is……
  • IKEA
I live very very close to an IKEA, so having that near to me is very refreshing. I can come in very casually looking for inspiration for my home. I check in my boys at the Ikea Playplace, and that gives mommy a solid 1 hour of browsing around child FREE. ***Be sure to check out their frames, plants, and kitchenware for affordable prices that beat other retailers. Those are the hot spots for me.

BUT Tiffany, what about…

Garage Sales, Flea Markets, Thrift Shops

Oh girl, you know me, that HAS to be ANOTHER blog post!!! I promise I’ll post one soon, on my favorites items to buy for your home from those exact places!!!!

In the mean time, follow me on IG so you can see what’s happening now!!

I usually do find myself at the thrift shop once or twice a week!

ALSO!! Be sure to check out what I’ve found in recently from Craigslist and other fabulously frugal places!!
